【和田シャクナゲ】

シャクナゲの野生種は、ヒマラヤと中国の高冷地を中心に自生しています。これらを使って、ヨーロッパやアメリカではふるくから品種改良が行われていきましたが、
暑さに弱い品種が多く、美しく咲かせることが難しい中、シャクナゲ界の先人“和田弘一郎氏”が作出した“太陽”は、交配種としてずば抜けて有名です。丈夫と言われながらも、繁殖技術がなかったために、殆ど出回らず、当時の愛好家の間では、憧れの的となっていた幻の品種です。
ほぼ、桜の染井吉野と同時期の開花となる極早咲き桜です。　若干性質の違ういくつかの個体があります。
