【板　橋】

この橋は板橋と称し、板橋という地名はこの板橋に由来するといわれています。板橋の名称は、既に鎌倉から室町時代にかけて書かれた古書の中に見えますが、江戸時代になると宿場の名となり、明治２２年に市制町村制が施行されると町名となり、そして昭和７年に東京市が拡大して板橋区が誕生した時も、板橋の名称
が採用されました。
板橋宿は、南の滝野川村境から北の前野村境まで２０町９間（約2,2㎞）の長さがあり、この橋から京よりを上宿と称し、江戸よりを中宿、平尾宿と称し、三宿を総称して板橋宿と呼びました。板橋宿の中心は本陣や問屋場、旅籠が軒を並べる中宿でしたが、江戸時代の地誌「江戸名所図会」の挿絵から、この橋周辺も非常に賑やかだったことが伺えます。
江戸時代の板橋は、太鼓状の木製の橋で、長さは9間（16,2ｍ）幅3間（5.4ｍ)ありました。少なくとも寛政十年（1798年）と、天保年間の二度修理が行われたことが分かります。近代に入ると、大正9年に新しい橋に架け替えられましたが、自動車の普及に対応
するため、昭和7年に早くもコンクリートの橋に架け替えられました。現在の橋は昭和47年に石神井川の改修工事の際、新しく架け替えられたものです。

In order to do so, as early as the Showa 7, it was replaced by a concrete bridge. The current bridge was newly replaced at the time of renovation work of Shakujii River in 1972.
