明治神宮外苑は、明治天皇のご聖徳を永遠に追慕し、敬仰申し上げるために民間有志により結成された「明治神宮奉賛会」が広く国民より募った寄付金によって造成され、大正１５年１０月２２日に明治神宮に奉献された。
明治時代には青山練兵場で、苑地内の石碑にも記されており明治天皇に所縁の深い場所である。
いちょう並木は大正１２年の出来。外苑並木の銀杏の本数は１４６本。青山通り側から秩父宮ラグビー場へ曲がった小道の樹へ続く。聖徳記念絵画館に向かって樹の高さを徐々に低くして立体感を出している。
